When should I replace my water heater?
If your water is no longer getting as hot as before, or if you are noticing water welling up from the input/output areas then it is a good idea to consider a new water heater. Sometimes an internal tank rupture can cause drips from the bottom of the unit or even where the heating elements are. If you notice any of these signs, give us a call. The image below is a rare example of when a ruptured tank causes a heating element and the surrounding insulation to melt.
What causes water heaters to fail?
Water heater longevity has a variety of factors such as tank vs. tankless, water condition (i.e. mineral presence), high pressure, or even the use of dissimilar metals like the use of a copper fitting on a dielectric nipple.
How much will a water heater replacement cost?
Cost depends on a large variety of factors from the type of unit purchased and additional items that may be needed such as a supply valve or an emergency electrical disconnect.
For a basic 40 Gallon Electric water heater swap with a set of flexible supply lines, we are an average of 25% cheaper than the competition at around $1,300. This covers the cost of us picking up the new unit and hauling the old one away.

Do you recommend tankless water heaters?
It depends!
Tankless water heaters are a great concept dating back to 1889. Instead of having a reserve tank of water, they work by heating the water as it passes through the unit. They are energy efficient since they only heat when in use and they have less of an affinity for collecting sediment, which tends to give them a longer life.
However, their installation can have different requirements from a standard tank. For a residential home, they commonly use a 3/4” natural gas connection. Or in the case of electric, you may need a lot of panel space, as 3 double pole breakers is equivalent to 6 breaker slots. Tankless gas water heaters also require venting outdoors.
As you can see, there are many factors involved, but we do love the energy savings and overall longevity of the units. Some installations are more straight forward than others, so feel free to give us a call if you’re curious about tankless!
